| Gordon Foulkes joined RiverVest® in August 2005 as a venture partner and became a managing director in January 2007. His focus is biopharmaceutical investments, and he is passionate about applying his drug discovery and development expertise to help entrepreneurs get their companies off the ground. While at RiverVest, Gordon has co-founded two companies, Kaperio, Inc. and Excaliard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In both cases, Gordon stepped in as interim CEO to help get the companies up and running. He is presently chairman of the board of Excaliard and board observer of MacroGenics, Inc., CGI Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Mpex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Gordon is a former board observer of Conforma Therapeutics Corporation, a RiverVest Fund I company that was acquired by Biogen Idec, Inc. in May 2006.
Prior to joining RiverVest, Gordon headed research and development and served on the board of multiple biotechnology companies, including: Oncogene Science, Inc. (now OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., NASDAQ: OSIP), Aurora Biosciences Corporation (acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc.), and Elitra Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (acquired by Merck & Co., Inc.).
At OSI, Gordon pioneered the early development of cell-based, high-throughput drug screening and oversaw multiple drug discovery programs, moving several from gene discovery to clinical trials. One of these is now an approved cancer drug, Tarceva®.
While in operations, Gordon helped secure more than 15 corporate partnerships, resulting in more than $200 million in recognized collaborative revenues and involving a diverse array of therapeutic areas and technology platforms. He has also directly participated in raising over $160 million in private financings, IPO, and follow-on public offerings.
In addition to his clinical and business development experience, Gordon has held academic positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a tenured staff member of The Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom. He completed his Ph.D. in 1980 at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and his B.Sc. at the University of Wales.
